How to Say Youre Overworked Without Sounding Like Youre Whining
How to Say Youre Overworked Without Sounding Like Youre WhiningHow to Say Youre Overworked Without Sounding Like Youre WhiningRemember the 40-hour (ahem, I meant 50) work week? If the concept is a distant memory, youve been putting in some major time lately. And Im willing to bet that no one except your friends or significant other has noticed. Sound familiar? For those of us who dont punch in and out from 9 to 5, its easy for the hours to stack up without anyone ever noticing. Hopefully, whatever youve been laboring over will be all the proof of your hard work you need, but there will come a time (likely when your co-workers are heading to happy hour while youre planning to spend your evening cozied up with the annual report) that youll feel less than appreciated and want to let your team know just how much hard work youre putting in. What you dont want, however, is to be that colleague whos always whining about how late she worked the night before or giving a dramatic recounting of having to re-format a presentation over the weekend. On that note, heres what to do when you want to let your colleagues know youre burning the midnight oil- without sounding like youre complaining about it.Option 1 Suffer in SilenceWhen to Use It If Its notlage a Chronic Problem, or Youre Not the Only OneOK, so this isnt exactly a solution, but its definitely an option you should consider before attempting anything else. I know its probably not what you want to hear, but sometimes, we have to work mora than wed like, and it sucks. If youre in a busy season or if everyone seems to go through crazy periods from time to time, no amount of positioning, hinting, or straight up pointing it out will earn you much sympathy. We all have to do it, and unless this is a chronic issue, its probably best to just suck it up.On the other hand, if your workload is encroaching on your personal life in a major way, and it seems like youre the only one affected, then its time to do something about it. Like...Option 2 Leave Some CluesWhen to Use It If You Just Need a Little Appreciation (or Sympathy)If youre feeling like youre the one bearing the brunt of the workload, its totally ritterlich to want to let your co-workers or boss know how much time youre putting in. Best case scenario, theyll offer to lend a hand if nothing else, it will get you a Get Out of Jail Free card as youre nodding off during your afternoon meetings.But- big disclaimer here- how you do it is key. One option is what I like to call the Easter Egg Approach. With this tactic, you wont say much, youll just leave little clues- like Easter eggs- for your colleagues. Just about everything we do these days has a timestamp on it, so when youre finishing up work (circa 10 PM), send a friendly email out to the team. Make it short and sweet- just the facts. Just sending something to prove youre in the office after hours will look a little desperate, but if you actually have something useful to contribute, itll look ju st like what it is Hard work done after hours.Or, try the FILO (first-in-belastung-out) approach Instead of hunkering down at your desk from the moment you get in until the moment you leave, make sure others notice that youre the first one in the office and the last to leave. No, dont make a big scene at the coffee machine about how youve been in the office- that isnt going to win you any sympathy points. Instead, simply engage in conversation with as many people as you can, and make sure youre talking about something work-related. After a few days of seeing you there before everyone else and still there when the office clears, your colleagues will get the hint that youre a little overworked right now. Finally, just ask for some help here and there. Ask Bob from accounting for some input or advice on the project youre working on, and when he comes back to you with feedback, hell see you hard at work. Mission accomplished.Option 3 Have the TalkWhen to Use It When Youre Truly Overworke d and Need Something to ChangeOf course, if you need more than just a little sympathy- as in, three more people to handle your workload- its time to stop with the subtle tactics and sit down with your manager for a chat. Put some time on your boss calendar, giving a hint about what youd like to discuss (something like, Id like to chat with you for a few minutes about the X projects Im working on and get some insight on how to move forward on them works perfectly). In the meantime, make a list of your projects and priorities. Before you can tell your manager how overloaded you are, youd better be prepared. If youre working late simply because your cat video watching lasted longer than usual, thats not a good excuse. But if youve taken on five new projects because someone just quit, thats worth mentioning. Then, offer some suggestions on how you think the load could be distributed in a more manageable way. For example, if its taking you a long time to finish a project because youre unf amiliar with a new piece of software the company has rolled out, suggest that you take a class to help get you up to speed. If there are truly more tasks on your plate than there are hours in the day, ask your boss for help prioritizing. When it comes time for the actual talk, remember to stay objective and positive. You want to highlight the fact that youre feeling a bit overwhelmed- not simply complaining. Frame everything youre saying in a positive way, and always be ready to offer suggestions and ask for your managers advice on how to work more effectively. Make sure youre clear about what youd like to achieve after the conversation, and suggest you both check in again in a week or two to see how things are going.Im a big fan of work-life balance, but sometimes stuff just needs to get done, and the hours between 9 and 5 arent going to cut it. And in those cases, recognize when and how to share that with your co-workers or boss. Youll earn some sympathy points or some help- witho ut looking like a whiner. What I Think When Co-workers Dont Respond Fast - The Muse
What I Think When Co-workers Dont Respond Fast - The MuseWhat I Think When Co-workers Dont Respond Fast I overthink everything. Its just my thing. And even though I know I do it, I still get caught up in my head. Lets take communication at work as an example. Whenever a co-worker takes too long to get back to me- and too long can really range depending on the situation- my mind starts racing and I assume the worst. If this sounds like you, read on to see if we share the saatkorn irrational thoughts, and if so, what you can do to make yourself feel better (and saner). 1. Uh Oh, Did I Offend You?And are you currently talking to HR?I like talking, and as a result, I often send long, unwieldy thoughts that sometimes take me more than a few messages to articulate. And sometimes, I worry that somewhere in all that text, Ive said something that offended you deeply. Cue the panic. But InsteadI could avoid this panic moment altogether by taking a deep breath before I send the initial message an d collecting my thoughts. The more concise I am, the more I stay on point. And the more I stay on point, the harder it is for me to slip in something unintentionally offensive. How to Cut All of Your Emails in Half (So People Actually Read Them)2. Do You Even Like Me?Were at work. I know that most of the time, we should be working and not rapid responding to our messages. But when I dont hear from you right away, I start assuming that you dont like me. And because you dont like me, youre not going to get me that report I need (at least not right away), and my project will be delayed, and the downward spiral of my career will commence. But InsteadI should focus on the facts. And the facts are that we dont always share the same priorities- even if were BFFs. So when I request something in the future, I should also ask when the person thinks theyll be able to get it back to me. That allows for the recipient to send a quick response, which in turn, helps me not to go through this.12 Ways to Become a More Likable Person at Work- Starting Right Now3. Am I About to Get Fired?Run a Google search for signs that you might get fired, and youll probably find one thing comes up more than anything else You start getting shut out of important meetings (or communication altogether), So the most extreme (and I know, irrational) reaction I have when you go silent is that you know Im about to get kicked to the curb and somehow you know. But InsteadIts important for me to, yet again, take a step back and ask myself why I think my job could possibly be on the line. Unless I have a solid reason to think that, the best thing I can do is send up a follow-up schmelzglas (assuming its been more than, lets say, five minutes) and ask when I can expect a response. The Most Effective Way to Follow Up When You Need a Response ASAPTheres one common thread throughout this entire article I need to stop jumping to conclusions and instead start communicating more clearly. The more clearly I communi cate, the less wiggle room I have in my brain to panic. And the less I panic, the happier and more productive I am.

Nanomaterials Transform Manufacturing
Nanomaterials Transform Manufacturing Nanomaterials Transform Manufacturing Nanomaterials Transform ManufacturingNanomanufacturing is the production of nanoscale materials, devices, and systems, which are then used in manufacturing to produce high-performance, innovative, next-generation products.Manipulating materials precisely at the nanoscale can seems hard to believe. Nanotechnology researchers typically operate in the range of 10 to 100 nanometers or less (in comparison, a human hair is about 100,000nanometerswide). At this scale, materials take on new physical properties that can greatly enhance the performance of manufactured products.Nanomaterialscan beengineered to improve properties such as strength, flexibility, durability, and lubricity and also be resistant to numerous environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and corrosion. When combined with their lighter weight, these materials can be ideal for automotive and aerospace applications.According to the Nati onal Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), a federal program established in 2000 with the goal of making the U.S. a global leader in nanotechnology, there are two types of nanomanufacturing top-downorbottom-up. Top-down fabrication starts with a block of original material and systematically reduces it to the final nanoscale product. With the bottom-up approach, products are created by building them up from atomic- and molecular-scale components, which gives engineers more manufacturing methods from which to choose. One of these methods is roll-to-roll processing, which manufactures nanoscale devices on a roll of ultrathin plastic or metal in high volumes. This is a popular method for next-generation consumer electronic devices, especially wearables. Korean scientists have recently developed highly productive roll-roll-process technology that can continuously transfer and package a range of large-scale integrated circuits (LSI), a breakthrough that could help realize the next generation of flexible electronics, including application processors, high-density memories and high-speed communication devices, writes Laurie Donaldson on sciencedirect.com. Possible future flexible consumer electronics made with roll-to-roll computers, wearable smart devices, and implantable biomedical devices.Automotive and AerospaceNanomaterials are critical for improving product performance and creating new, innovative products that enhance manufacturing. For example, an inexpensive nanotechnology process increases the strength of metals such as steel by as much as ten times, making it much more resistant to corrosion.Announced in 2015 by Seattle-based start-up named Modumetal, the process uses electroplating to create a multi-layered coating, where each nanolayer is only a few nanometers thick and made from a different material. The final coating greatly increases the life span of the original steel, making it ideal for oil and gas equipment, bridges, and other major infrastructure.Nanoma terials are especially in demand in automotive and aerospace, with top applications being lightweighting vehicles and spacecraft. According to NNI, reducing the weight of a commercial jet aircraft by 20 percent can reduce its fuel consumption by as much as 15 percent. A preliminary analysis performed for NASA shows the development and use of advanced nanomaterials with twice the strength of conventional composites would reduce the gross weight of a launch vehicle by as much as 63 percent.notlage only could this save a significant amount of energy needed to launch spacecraft into orbit, states NNI, but it would also enable the development of single-stage to orbit launch vehicles, further reducing launch costs, increasing mission reliability, and opening the door to alternative propulsion concepts.Carbon nanotube sheets are being used in next-generation air vehicles, where their light weight and conductivity makes them ideal for applications such as electromagnetic shielding and therm al management. Other nanoscale products in the automotive industry include high-power rechargeable battery systems, thermoelectric materials for temperature controls, tires with lower rolling resistance, high-efficiency/low-cost sensors and electronics, thin-film smart solar panels, and fuel additives for cleaner exhaust and extended range.Communication and the Internet of ThingsThe Internet of Things is based on communication between machines and devicesthis requires sensors to collect, transmit, and manage/analyze data. Advances in nanoscale sensors and devices continue to improve the monitoring of equipment, leading to higher productivity. Nanotechnology has also greatly improved computing and electronics, leading to faster, smaller, and more portable systems that can manage and store larger amounts of information. For example, transistors have been greatly reduced in size through nanotechnology. At the turn of the century, states NNI, a typical transistor was 130 to 250 nanometer s in size. In 2014, Intel created a 14-nanometer transistor, then IBM created the first seven-nanometer transistor in 2015, and then Lawrence Berkeley National Lab demonstrated a one-nanometer transistor in 2016.Nanoscale sensors are also critical for flexible electronics, especially those embedded in wearables. NNI reports that other nanomaterials like graphene and cellulosic nanomaterials are components in flexible electronics that enable wearable and tattoo sensors, photovoltaics that can be sewn onto clothing, and electronic paper that can be rolled up. Making flat, flexible, lightweight, non-brittle, highly efficient electronics opens the door to countless smart products, states NNI.Limitless PotentialNanotechnology and nanomanufacturing are revolutionizing many manufacturing sectors, including information technology, defense, medicine, transportation, energy, environmental science, telecommunications, and electronics. Perhaps the most intriguing intersection of technologies wi ll be 3D printing and nanotechnology. Nanomaterialsfor example, carbon nanotubesare being used in 3D printers. And 3D printers have already printed objects as small as a few microns. In an interview posted on gereports.com, Ray Kurzweil, a noted entrepreneur, engineer, and Google executive, states he believes that the exponential breakthrough in manufacturing will happen around 2030, when nanotechnology and 3D printing are fully integrated. The ultimate revolution will take place when we start printing designs fabricated from individual atoms, says he says. Exponential growth is always surprising. Its going to keep happening and its going to be delightful.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Exponential growth is always surprising. 4 career lessons we can learn from Millennials
4 career lessons we can learn from Millennials4 career lessons we can learn from MillennialsSavvy, progressive, and success-oriented Millennials are known for their tendency to do things differently. Theyve been raised in the era of smartphones and social media, tools that emphasize the endless possibilities the world has to offer. As a result, many Millennials have grown up to strive for prosperity and think outside the box to achieve it.These attitudes have heavily reflected on the Millennial approach to the working world. Millennials have long-since abandoned the Baby Boomer philosophy that sometimes a job is just a job, and that the sole responsibility is to be able to support your family. Millennials are starting families at a later age than previous generations, and some are notlage starting families at all. This new individualized approach to life goes hand-in-hand with their emphasis on career satisfaction.Although many think that theres not much to learn from the younger ge neration when it comes to the workforce, their perspectives are actually quite eye-opening. So, what can Millennials teach us about finding the right career?Be a self-starterMillennials grew up in the age of the influencer self-made celebrities and professionals that used social media to gain notoriety for their skills and talents. As a result, never in history has there been a generation this fixated on becoming entrepreneurs. According to Forbes, 72% of Millennials want to be their own boss. Sure, previous generations have seen their fair share of hotshot CEOs, but theyve also seen a large percentage of workers that are perfectly satisfied working 9-5 jobs under someone else. For older generations, work is about stability. For Millennials, its about fulfillment. They use the resources the world wide web provides to be their own boss and dont simply wait for the right job to fall into their lap. The Millennial generation teaches us to put ourselves out there and take the risk to ma ke your own success. After all, the biggest regrets we have in life are the things we didnt try, right?Explore your job opportunitiesMillennials are job-hoppers. And, while this trait is perceived as negative by some, it can actually be quite healthy in early employment. Millennials are searching for their calling, and they wont stop until they find a job they truly enjoy. A CareerBuilder survey showed that 25% of young employees have worked five jobs. Employers are adapting to this growing statistic, with the same survey showing that 32% of employers saying they expect workers to job hop.The Millennial generation stresses the importance of trying new things, gaining experience, and making contacts all benefits of working a variety of jobs. For individuals who dont quite have career aspirations or a set goal, this can also be an extremely effective way to find a field they enjoy.Connectivity is keyDespite the fact that so many Millennials work remotely, often from the comforts of t heir at-home office, they understand that connectivity is key. They value constant feedback, performance reviews, and progress meetings more than their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts. This is a surprising fact to those who believe Millennials prefer to be glued to their phone screens, avoiding communication at all costs. The truth is that 84% of Millennials value an open communications policy over job perks, preferring honest feedback over the usual job perks. Checking in for 15 minutes a week is even more appealing to Millennial employees than a top-tier benefits package. Due to the open communication and connectivity fostered by the social media age, its not a surprise employees expect this in the everyday world. Millennials understand the importance of feedback in improving job performance and strengthening work relationships.Follow your passionA job is not just a job to Millennials its a way of life. In a study by Department26, 44% of Millennials valued passion for their job role over salary and other benefits. Millennials are preaching the do what you love philosophy, recognizing that satisfaction in a job is more important than perks, and contributes to employment longevity. Rather than chasing paychecks, they chase contentment, which contributes to a healthier attitude toward money and eradicates stigma surrounding career choices.Instead of judging their peers for their employment choices or striving to land in prosperous fields pre-determined for them by their parents, Millennials understand that the most important qualifier for a career is enjoyment.Ellie Batchiyska is a writer for EveryUSB, a custom flash drive retailer whose products are often used to publish employee handbooks, CVs, and all kinds of employment resources.

Heres how to make your job more fulfilling
Heres how to make your job more fulfillingHeres how to make your job more fulfillingHaving lunch with friends, playing with my kids, vacation days - these are all fun. When we first started Morphic Therbeiapeutic, our VP of Finance said its important to tell all candidates how much fun they would have at the company over the next few years. But is fun the right language to describe work in a modern company? Or is it aelendher even more positive feeling entirely? We generally consider things fun if we engage with them naturally and effortlessly, often in the spur of the moment. If you apply that to a workplace setting, this could mean texting and responding to email. Catching up on industry news. Ordering office supplies and business cards - and even attending a number of meetings throughout the day.Actually, is that even fun? ur normal definition of fun clearly doesnt fit the workplace setting. So, heres why you shouldnt aim for work thats fun, but for work thats fulfilling.Struggling f or funIn the workplace, we struggle to achieve excellence. We consider the struggle worthy of our time. We push ourselves- hard. We give up autonomy in buchen to pursue something bigger than we could do ourselves. In sports, this feeling is equal to physical pain. You probably tell yourself, Cmon you can do this. You got this. Ive said this to myself hundreds of thousands of times. In an intellectual pursuit, we feel the frustrating pain of being stuck. I find myself saying the exact same thing, Cmon. You got this. For complicated problems, many cant be solved until they have been internalized. Until all aspects of the problem can be recalled in working memory in order to let your subconscious work on it. It takes a lot of effort to get a problem into working memory.Think back to a time when you really pushed yourself to your limits, when you were trying to solve a problem at the edge of both your field and your capabilities. When people are solving these types of hard problems, its a different feeling than having a fun lunch with a friend.Getting in the zoneSome people call this a flow state. This describes the psychology concept labeled by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, typically referred to as being in the zone. This is a mental state many achieve when their skill is equivalent to the difficulty levels. The only problem with this is that if you are in that state perpetually, you dont get any better.Professor Anders Ericsson, an expert in the science of peak performance, says flow is not a feeling that makes you improve. You have to be pushing the difficulty levels if you want to solve increasingly difficult problems and improve your skills. Is it fun when youre mentally giving it your all and reaching your limits intellectually? When a musician is practicing a song for hours to get it right, thats not necessarily fun. In fact, one study of world-class violinists reported that these performers could be in that intense state for a maximum of an hour and a half. After, th ey were so mentally exhausted they would need to immediately take a nap.But most people are willing to go through intense periods of work because they can envision a future version of themselves. That future version will look back and thank you for the effort you put in today. So, its not that every single moment is enjoyable. But there is a satisfaction that comes from the process. And of course, eventually, youre rewarded with the accomplishment.Perhaps we lack the vocabulary, and accomplishing tasks is just a different type of fun. There are many instances where it takes effort to have a difficult conversation. Or tackle a pile of journal articles. Or spend time trying to understand someones opposing view. But afterwards, you think, Wow That was great. With difficult activities, the fun and fulfillment comes after completing the task.Aiming for fulfillmentEvery moment at work is not going to be fun, but you should feel a sense of accomplishment walking out every night. The time you put in meant something. And that feeling of making progress and increasing mastery- its addictive.I tell all potential candidates that if they want to challenge themselves and push their capabilities, then Morphic is the place for them. We dont work on simple issues. We solve some of the most difficult and complex problems out there, and we give everyone the opportunity do their very best work. Because at the end of the day, we exist to solve problems. And thats why people join the team. When I look at our employees, I see them doing meaningful work. When theyre absorbed in their work, it rarely looks fun. But when I see them spontaneously throughout the day, they look happy. This feeling of overall accomplishment and fulfillment is what companies need to strive for.Finding fun in fulfillmentWe all gravitate to the things that are natural and spontaneous, such as opening up email or checking off a to-do list. We resist things that are difficult, such as reviewing a direct report so y ou can help him or her make progress on a major problem.Ease is an extremely powerful urge, perhaps even more powerful than a flight-or-fight response. When working, you have to stay vigilant to anything that is easy and spontaneous. Are you just following an autopilot response? Theres a good chance whatever youre doing isnt valuable or fun.On the contrary, orient and steer yourself to anything difficult. Few will go this direction. Theres a low chance youre wasting time. Tasks or problems in this direction are not spontaneous and will take self-discipline to accomplish. But there is a much higher chance that they will provide more fulfillment- and turn out to be fun in the long run. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

8 Secret Sins of the Office
8 Secret Sins of the Office 8 Secret Sins of the Office The pointers were backed by Cynthia Shapiro, a former HR executive and author of Corporate Confidential. Were always reading someones opinion of what to and not to do while at work, and I usually get a kick out of it. ABCs insight welches no different. Most of the things on the list are like seriously? Id get fired for that? But, hey, perhaps thats why theyre such a secret?Well, for anyone who missed last weeks episode, Im zu siche to offer a recap complete with my own commentary about how to avoid falling prey to these sinful temptations8. Being Mr.PopularMr. Popular is just as it soundsbeing well known and well liked in the bro. Youre the go-to person, the it guy or gal. While in high school this may have been on the top of everyones list, Shapiro says, as a professional working adult, it should be far from yours. Sharing too much personal information about yourself can get you into trouble quickly. Shapiro says friendships need to be strategically crafted.Recruiter.coms advice Keep a solid line between professional and personal lives. Everyone isnt your friend in the office and may not have your best interest in mind. Likewise, you dont want to spread too much personal information about yourself because 1) it may make others uncomfortable knowing certain things about you and 2) you dont want to hinder managements perception of you based on happenings outside the office.7. MultitaskingEven though our baboes may say they want us to work on a bunch of things at once and be productive, Shapiro says this isnt always true. Multitasking makes your performance tank, and dividing your attention between tasks can decrease a workers efficiency.Recruiter.coms advice Make a weekly schedule of all the important tasks that must be completed. Decide on the level of importance to arrange the tasks in the order of completion. Allot specific amounts of time for each task, each day. This will ensure youre getting your wo rk done in a timely manner while still giving each task undivided attention.6. Talking to HRAlthough HR may tell you to come to them for help, Shapiro says be cautious. HR works for the company. They wont tell other employees what you said, but they will tell your boss depending on the situation.Recruiter.coms Advice Approach your boss, co-worker or whomever you have the issue with in a professional manner. Ask the person if he/she has time to discuss a concern. Remind him or her of what happened and your perspective of the situation. Ask for his or hers to clear up any miscommunication. Then, suggest you both offer plausible solutions to avoid this happening again.5. Over decoratingShapiro claims this can be a career killer because office decorations are an unconscious test of values and loyalties. If an employees office is filled with religious things and troll dolls, it can cause others to make assumptions. If his or her desk is messy and chaotic, that can translate to a messy pe rson. Schapiro also warned about family photos, saying theyre risky because it tells employers youd rather be at home.Recruiter.coms advice Decorate your desk in whatever way expresses you and makes you relaxed. Always ensure its professional, organized and doesnt include anything that may offend or scare/harm others. After all, your desk is yours but you share the space with others. Be considerate.4. Bringing kids to workA childs bad behavior reflects on his/her parents. Employers will think if the worker cannot control his/her children, how can this person control an office?Recruiter.coms advice Unless its bring your child to work day, leave your children at home. If you are going to bring in kids, know your companys culture and what days and times would be best.3. Feeding others (bringing in treats)Shapiro says if you do this too much, you wont be taken seriously. This is more toward women as she claims bringing in goodies makes women appear as the office mascot or office mom.Rec ruiter.coms advice Everyone loves treats, but most people are also health conscious. Bake sparingly and with a purpose, i.e. holidays, birthdays, etc. You can also have a volunteer sign up when these days come around so its not just one person always bringing in the treats.2. Signing off with loveWith love and/or love email signatures have no place in business correspondence, Shapiro points out. Dont send these to clients or your boss, especially.Recruiter.coms Advice Create a standard signature.1. Working too hardEven though most Americans are workaholics, 20/20 says this attitude can backfire. Overworking can decrease performance, which will negatively impact a workers image.Recruiter.coms advice Take periodic breaks, stop skipping lunch and go home when your shift is over. This may sound lazy or uncommitted but your boss simply cares that the work is done and its done well. Riding the Canadian rails 2 experiences on different tracks
Riding the Canadian rails 2 experiences on different tracks Riding the Canadian rails 2 experiences on different tracks âAll aboard,â announces the service manager, and weâre off from Vancouver. Making our way within Canada, there are two options â" the Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail â" each a nostalgic adventure, each distinctively different. So, join me on the rails for the inside scoop on the maple leaf nationâs province-to-province train travel. The Rocky MountaineerEntering the Rocky Mountaineer Station, thereâs a sense of excitement. Daylight floods the room from full-length windows fronting the track framing our soon-to-be mode of transport. Beyond, an impeccable string of navy and gold train carriages is a grand sight. A whistle sounds and weâre ready to go with bagpipes blaring in the background. As we make our way weâre greeted by uniformed hosts and hostesses on a red carpet leading to the train. Scheduled departure is 8 a.m. but weâre off and running at 7:56 a.m. Practically an army of Rocky Mountaineer staff are lining the platform and waving goodbyes.Follow Ladders on Fl ipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Onboard, train manager Peter Maseja, an 18-year veteran, introduces himself and shares a bit about our pending journey â" we have 18 pieces of equipment, 506 passengers and our top speed will be 45 m.p.h. âWhat time do we arrive?â someone asks. His response is somewhat vague: âWe share tracks with freight trains, so we never know,â he says. Turns out this is the honest to god truth for we never do learn the exact ETA, only that it would likely be after whatâs scheduled. The Rocky Mountaineer is a seasonal train (April â" October) that adheres to a partial schedule for a simple reason â" to maximize daylight. Its routes (Seattle to Vancouver, Vancouver to Jasper and mine, Vancouver to Banff/Lake Louise) are milepost to milepost chock full of astounding terrain, landscape that needs to be seen. Passengers stay in hotels at the half-way point â" for m e in Kamloops â" their luggage unseen since boarding awaiting in their room.GoldLeaf LuxuryTraveling in its top-of-the-line premier class, GoldLeaf, the details are impressive. The bi-level car is topped with a 180-degree dome, comfortable (assigned) seats are equipped with trays for writing, organizing and the bevy of snacks served (preceded by a refresher towel). These range from warm-from-the-oven scones to chips and salsa and freshly baked cookies. Beverages (including beer, wine and spirits) are served throughout-the-day. On the first level is a formal white cover restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Most food is locally sourced and cooked onboard, and features choices such as a feta and spinach souffle for breakfast and short ribs for lunch. The best thing about the restaurant level is its rear open-air viewing platform for fresh air and photo opps.Having done the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express trip years ago, Rocky Mountaineer is reminiscent of that lineâs fine appointments; but unlike Europeâs luxury train, this one is augmented with informative commentary and loudspeaker announcements like âBear on the right!â or âMoose on the left!â And, taking a curtain call as we pull into Banff station a âgangâ of elk was sure enough there to welcome us along with a row of uniformed employees.Excursion on Via RailDescribed as âreal railroadingâ by fellow passenger and train enthusiast, John Mueller, there is something inherently romantic about an excursion on VIA Rail, a back-in-the-day peek into train travel of yesteryear. Having debuted more than 60 years ago and refurbished over the years, its sleek stainless cars still shout authenticity. My winter journey from Vancouver to Toronto aboard The Canadian consisted of four-nights, three-days, 2,775 miles, four time zones and the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. It began with congratulatory champagne while seated in the dome-observation car as we pulled out from Vancouverâs Pacific Central Station at noon on a Tuesday. The scheduled arrival in Toronto was for Saturday at 2 p.m.With VIA Rail the train doubles as your hotel. Of the various options, my favorite is Sleeper Plus â" a private cabin with bunk beds that convert to daytime seating, a sink and a private lavatory (sleeper cars offer a shared shower, for which I never had to wait). Stops are numerous, but the length is not, so the time is spent stretching your legs and breathing in Canadaâs fresh air. Three meals are served each day with white cloth service and extravagances like prime rib, VIA Railâs signature chocolate torte and comfort foods like fried chicken and burgers. The biggest draws, however, were found outside the windows, always a winter wonderland â" from white-topped Canadian Rocky peaks and wide-open snow-covered prairies to the seasonâs clear, dark skies punctuated by a canopy of stars (weâre told to look for a Northern Lights sighting on approach t o Edmonton). Add to the mix an education on the meaning of the green, yellow and red signal combos and a graceful rocking to sleep when itâs bedtime. The result is sweet relaxation. And when pulling into Torontoâs Union Station, albeit a few hours late, parting is with sweet sorrow.Tips for riding the Canadian rails:Expect trains to be late and donât book return flights or other transportation on the day of arrival.Pad an extra day or two on the end of the trip to see Canadaâs cities.Consider off-season VIA Rail travel. Why? Rates are discounted and there are fewer passengers. Also, views are unobstructed (i.e. no tree-lined tracks) and there is 24/7 access for Sleeper Plus passengers to areas enjoyed by those in Prestige Class. If booking in Sleeper Plus, book an F cabin for more space.Pack light. Except for a small duffel, luggage is not allowed on the Rocky Mountaineer. When packing for VIA Rail, think airplane carry-on allowances â" one personal item and a small piece of luggage.www.rockymountaineer.com ww.viarail.ca. The Best Way to Job Search When You Are Employed
The Best Way to Job Search When You Are Employed The Best Way to Job Search When You Are Employed Job searching and interviewing for a new position when you are currently employed can be tricky, especially if you dont (and you shouldnt) want your employer to know that you are considering quitting. Its important to be careful how you go about your job search and how you take time off for interviews, so your employer doesnt discover that you are job searching until you are ready for them to know. You dont want to be caught job searching by your boss if you can help it. The reason its important to be careful is that employees have been fired for even saying they hate their job or their company, much less that they are thinking of quitting. For example, dont put a job title on Facebook, or any other social media site, that says Slave at UPS. The person who listed it was a friend of a friend who didnt have his privacy settings adjusted as he should have.? Tips for Job Searching When You Have a Job Having information like that available for anyone to see isnt going to impress your old employer - or your potential new employer who may also see it. Be discreet, very discreet, when youre employed and job hunting. Plan Your Job Search Take the time to plan your job search, both from having everything you need lined up before you start - resume, a cover letter outline you can customize for each job you apply for, a solid LinkedIn profile, and professional references (non-work references) who can attest to your ability to do a new job. Take the time to plan to job search as confidentially and strategically as possible. Streamline Your Job Search There are some great job search tools that will enable you to keep your job search organized and managed. Use these job search engines and set up email alerts so you are notified when new jobs are posted. Review these ten easy steps to organize your job search to get started. Dont Job Search on Work Computers Dont use your work computer for writing your resume, applying for jobs, or communicating with employers. Use a Gmail or other personal email address for all your non-work-related communications. Use Your Personal Email Address Dont use your work email address for job hunting. Use your personal account or set up a free web-based email account specifically for job searching. Dont Use Your Office Phone Number Dont put your office phone number on your resume and job applications. Use your cell phone or personal landline number. Keep Your Job Search to Yourself Dont advertise on social media or tell your co-workers that you are looking for another job or dont like the one you have. Even if you tell one person, thats one person too many. The more people who know, the better the chance that your current company will find out you are job searching. Very Carefully Tap Your Connections Do talk privately, however, to the professional connections you know are trustworthy. Ask them if they can send any leads they come across your way, reminding them to keep your confidences and not to disclose the fact that youre job seeking. Also, tap those connections to see if they will provide a reference for you. Use Non-Work References Dont use your supervisor or any other references from the job you have now. If the hiring managers ask permission to talk to your manager (and they probably will), you can tell them you would need to have a preliminary job offer first, but that the final offer could be contingent upon their talking to your work references. Dont Interview From Work Many employers use phone interviews for first-round screening. Dont schedule a phone interview for when you are at work unless you have a private office. Try to schedule on your lunch hour or early or late in the day, and do it on your own time and from your own phone. Schedule Your Interviews Carefully On a related note, schedule your interviews carefully so that you wont be missed at work. Again, early or late in the day are easier to explain to your current employer. Another alternative would be to take personal or vacation time. If you have multiple interviews to schedule, you may be able to do them on the same day. Bring a Change of Clothes Dont walk into the office wearing a suit if your normal office attire is business casual or casual. Bring a change of clothes and change elsewhere before you head out to the interview and back to work. When to Give Notice Dont give notice to your current employer until you have a firm job offer and you have accepted it. Id wait, as well, until your references have been checked and you have a start date scheduled. It does happen, on occasion, that an employer withdraws a job offer. You dont want that to happen and end up with no job at all. Quitting Your Job If youre careful, you can leave your old job and move to a new one without alienating your managers and colleagues. Giving adequate notice and offering to help with the transition that will arise from your departure work well for avoiding hard feelings when you quit. Heres how to resign gracefully from your job. The Bottom Line KEEP YOUR JOB SEARCH SECRET: Donât give your current employer reason to fire you by telling them that you intend to find a new job with a different organization. Conduct your search, if possible, outside the office, using your personal phone number and a non-work-related email account.BE DISCREET ONLINE: Be careful what you share on social media about your desire to find a new job. Should this information get back to your supervisor or co-workers, questions will be asked about your intentions and you may find that your current job is suddenly in jeopardy.WAIT TO GIVE NOTICE: Donât give notice to your current employer until you have a firm job offer in hand, with a scheduled starting date for your new position. If possible, negotiate with your new employer so that you can provide your current supervisor with the standard two weeksâ notice.

4 Career Lessons I Learned from Gymnastics
4 Career Lessons I Learned from Gymnastics 4 Career Lessons I Learned from Gymnastics Every time the summer Olympics roll around, I look forward to watching one event in particular: womenâs gymnastics. When I was young I dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast, and I participated in competitive gymnastics for five years. When I quit at 12 years old, it was one of the hardest decisions of my life at the time. And even though I never earned an Olympic gold, thanks to my gymnastics training, I gained plenty of important lessons that Iâve carried with me throughout my not-so-athletic career. Check out the valuable lessons you can learn from this well-loved Olympic sport. You Always Need to Warm Up Gymnasts know that they must warm up before a workout to make sure they donât injure themselves, and they need to stretch to gain the necessary flexibility to perform their tricks. And while we donât have to do 20 jumping jacks or hold the splits for 30 seconds before showing up at the office, we do have to mentally warm up and stretch to keep ourselves sharp. What sort of t hings are warm ups for work? Think about how you jumpstart your brain in the morning, what inspires you to pursue new projects, or what tricks you use to get yourself out of a rut. Sometimes, Iâll stare at a blank computer screen all day, trying to come up with an ad design- and Iâve come to realize that usually means I havenât warmed up properly. Iâve found that checking out some design blogs or doing some scrapbooking over the weekend are good and effective ways to prepare me for design tasks in the office. You Canât Stick Every LandingSometimes, gymnasts wobble on the balance beam, face-plant off the bars, and misplace their feet during a tumbling pass on the floor. But gymnasts know that you canât stick every landing- and that itâs what you do after you fall thatâs important. Instead of dwelling on the misstep, gymnasts work even harder to finish off the routine perfectly, and then spend hours in the gym after the competition figuring out how to not make the mista ke again. The same is true in your career. You will mess up sometimes- itâs a fact of life! Accepting that you will make mistakes- and focusing on learning from them when you do- will change your own missteps from negative experiences to positive ways to improve your skills.Even if You're Talented, You Still Need to PracticeSome people are just naturally gifted, and others get where they are through sheer determination. To be an Olympic gymnast or achieve success in your career, you must have both. Even the most talented gymnasts spend the majority of their time in the gym working to get better. When I was competing in gymnastics, I was in the gym 5 days a week for 4-hour practices. Thatâs right, they gave us 10-year-olds the âlightâ schedule of 20 hours per week! For competitive-level gymnasts, practicing is more than a full-time job.So, even if youâre a naturally gifted- say, at public speaking- you still have to put in the time to polish your skills. That means practicin g in front of the mirror, asking for constructive criticism, and attending seminars to learn from other experts. Raw talent doesnât mean you can rest on your laurels- it means that youâve got a competitive edge when you decide to work hard.Success Takes TimeashTheGymnastParents of Olympians recall their 5-year-olds spending hours at the gym, and gymnasts themselves detail practices before and after school that mean 40+ hour weeks. They work for ten years climbing the ladder from district champion, to national champion, and ultimately, to Olympic athlete. And just as gymnasts donât jump into the sport earning medals (or even competing for them), you wonât be at the top of your field until youâve put in the time and work. Youâll work your way up from an entry-level employee doing grunt work to being a division manager with a team of your own- but like gymnasts, youâll need 10 years of experience in your field to achieve that fancy title. Particularly when youâre early i n your career, it can be easy to feel like youâre not going anywhere. But by keeping your eye on the prize and continuing to put in time and practice, you will earn your shot at the gold.Gymnastics was a great experience for me when I was young, and I continue to see the sportâs influence my life. From good posture during presentations to my core strength while lugging a backpack across my MBA campus to these career lessons, Iâve carried the things Iâve learned from gymnastics with me throughout my life.Photo courtesy of Raphael Goetter.

This is what the most successful people do before bed every night
This is what the most successful people do before bed every night This is what the most successful people do before bed every night Before going to bed, thereâs a nightly ritual that successful business leaders like Arianna Huffington, Oprah Winfrey, and Sheryl Sandberg do to prepare for their workdays. It doesnât involve fancy gadgets or time-consuming, prohibitively-expensive life hacks. All you need to do to prepare like a successful leader is to learn how to count your blessings at night and practice gratitude.Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, for example, says she writes down three moments of personal joy, a practice she started last January following the death of her husband.âI used to go to bed every night thinking about what I did wrong and what I was going to do wrong the next day. Now I go to sleep thinking of what went right,â Sandberg said, describing how this practice has transformed her life. These moments of personal joy donât have to be extraordinary.Media mogul Oprah Winfrey said she kept a nightly gratitude journal for a decade straight in the midst of building her television network. It tracked small and big victories such as âeating cold melon on a bench in the sun,â âa run around Floridaâs Fisher Island with a slight breeze that kept me cool,â and âMaya Angelou calling to read me a new poem.âReminding yourself to be thankful forces you to stay present and aware of the world around you instead of getting stuck on your failures and hiccups. It keeps you looking forward. âYou radiate and generate more goodness for yourself when youâre aware of all you have and not focusing on your have-nots,â Winfrey said about why she does it.The science behind why gratitude worksMultiple studies also back up how gratitude can boost our well-being and improve our moods. A 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being found that taking just 15 minutes out of every evening to write a gratitude journal helped students quiet their minds and sleep longer and better.Gratitude not only helps us sleep at night, it also prepares to face each work day in the best possible mindset. A study in the Journal of Research in Personality found that people who practice gratitude were less prone to depressive episodes. They were able to block toxic emotions like envy, resentment, and regret with the force of these small yet strong moments of grateful thinking. We are an anxious species that needs these positive reminders. Our brains are engineered to remember whatâs wrong, to obsess over mistakes, because we evolved as humans to remember quickly from our failures for our survival, as clinical psychologist Rick Hanson argues in his book âHardwiring Happiness.âUltimately, nightly gratitude works because it rewires your stressed brain to end its day on a high note. It teaches your mind to pay attention and take pleasure in the small wins of life, so that the journeys of life are as joyous as its finish lines. This is what the most successful people do before bed every night Before going to bed, thereâs a nightly ritual that successful business leaders like Arianna Huffington, Oprah Winfrey, and Sheryl Sandberg do to prepare for their workdays. Now I go to sleep thinking of what went right,â Sandberg said, describing how this practice has transformed her life.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! These moments of personal joy donât have to be extraord inary.Media mogul Oprah Winfrey said she kept a nightly gratitude journal for a decade straight in the midst of building her television network. A 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being found that taking just 15 minutes out of every evening to write a gratitude jour nal helped students quiet their minds and sleep longer and better.Gratitude not only helps us sleep at night, but it also prepares to face each workday in the best possible mindset. A study in the Journal of Research in Personality found that people who practice gratitude were less prone to depressive episodes. They were able to block toxic emotions like envy, resentment, and regret with the force of these small yet strong moments of grateful thinking. We are an anxious species that need these positive reminders. What to Do When Youre the Least-Experienced at Work -The Muse
What to Do When Youre the Least-Experienced at Work -The Muse What to Do When Youre the Least-Experienced at Work You just started a new job and youâre so excited. Thereâs just one catch: Youâre clearly the least experienced person on the team. Maybe youâre the youngest, or maybe youâve changed careers, or maybe you just made an internal transfer. Whatever the scenario, everyone around you knows their work like the back of their hand, leaving you feeling like youâre lagging behind. While thatâs not the most comforting or enjoyable feeling, the fact is youâll face challenges specific to having less experience. But since you know that, you can be prepared for- and address- the four most common issues. 1. Challenge: You Have Imposter Syndrome When you learn co-workers have a lot more experience than you, your first thought might be, âOMG they made a huge mistake hiring me.â But, unless you lied on your resume (in which case, yes, it was a huge mistake), your new employer knows youâre new to this kind of work. And they decided to hire you anyways. That means they see great potential in you, and believe you can do this. (Itâs true: Theyâre not going to put their neck on the line for someone they thinkâll fail.) Solution The first step is for you to believe in yourself, too. Youâre here because you threw your hat in the ring- and probably put in a lot of legwork applying. So, reconnect with the ambitious self that thought you should go out and apply for this role. What did you argue made you qualified? Lean on those traits! Second, if you notice anything you feel especially nervous about, see if you canât bolster those skills. Take a class or reach out to a new colleague or a networking contact and ask how to develop the skill you feel youâre lacking. 2. Challenge: You Think You Know it All Some people fall on the other side of the spectrum, and this challenge threatens to derail you even more, because itâs harder to self-diagnose. Maybe you know youâre the least experienced, but you think âI got this!â and therefore have zero interest in listening to others, learning from their prior experiences, or asking for help. As you can imagine, this can hurt you in many ways. First, you donât have the benefit of institutional knowledge. Maybe your idea is brilliant- and thatâs why someone pitched it six months ago, only to see it fall flat for an unforeseen reason. But you wonât be able to learn from that, if you steamroll their feedback. Second, itâs not going to gain you many friends. Often, thereâs a degree of paying your dues when youâre new. While itâs not always the most stimulating work, it can go a long way to garnering respect among your colleagues and making you look like a team player. Solution By all means, be confident and share your ideas- but donât confuse that with acting like youâre the smartest person in the room. One of the best things you can do is work on your listening skills. During a brainstorming session, donât aim to be the first one to speak. Instead, listen to what your colleagues have to say and see if you can support, build on, or ask to learn more about their ideas. Additionally, ask for help and feedback, instead of going it alone and guessing. Admitting you donât have all the answers not only makes you more approachable, but it makes people more likely to trust you when you say you know what youâre talking about. 3. Challenge: You Catch All the Low-Level Tasks Some grunt work is par for the course. It may even be useful- giving you a foundation so youâll understand higher-level tasks that youâre going to be assigned in the near future. However, you donât want to be taken advantage of, and some people can tend to âdumpâ meaningless tasks on less-experienced colleagues. While you want to be seen as someone with a good attitude, you donât want these tasks to distract from your actual job. Solution The best way to handle this challenge is to use open communication. Talk to your boss about the reality of balancing these annoying to-doâs with your other work. Ask her to help you prioritize your task list, and if she can share how these tasks add value to the team or your future work. If you have colleagues who keep asking you to pitch in, see if you can use these assignments as an entry point to more engaging work. Say, âIâm happy to help with [x], and Iâm also able to [y] and would love to make a larger contribution to the projectâ¦â 4. Challenge: You Need More Time Phrases like âget up to speedâ and âcatch upâ are time-related for a reason. As you know, youâll be more efficient at a task the 10th time you do it- and even more so the 100th time. But your co-workers may forget that the database isnât intuitive, or that, before all of the shortcuts are committed to memory, youâll have to keep clicking in and out and cross-referencing. If you arenât allowed enough time, youâre in a perpetual state of scrambling. Solution This challenge has an easy fix, because thereâs no shame in wanting to get things right- or being new. So, often all you need is to give a simple reminder: Say, âIâm new to [whateverâs taking you a while]. Do you have any suggestions for how I could do [process] faster?â Then, ask if, in the meantime, you could have extra time for that task- stressing that you want to do it correctly. Thisâll also give them a chance to tell you if timeâs a factor and theyâd rather have it done than perfect. Youâve leapt to the next level and now are feeling a little out of your league. Take heart thatâs how it feels at the beginning. But soon enough, time will pass, someone new will be hired, and theyâll be coming to you with questions.

How to speak up and advocate for your accomplishments at work
How to speak up and advocate for your accomplishments at work How to speak up and advocate for your accomplishments at work Just because youâre an introvert doesnât mean you donât have a lot to offer your workplace.Hereâs how to advocate for yourself in the office when youâre not the most outgoing employee in the bunch.Show your enthusiasm when you talkCIO Magazine features an article about how âshy peopleâ like those in IT can get better at âself-promotion,â with commentary from career coach Curt Rosengren, who used to work in tech.âThe hang-up most people have with self-promotion has to do with the fact that they donât like to talk about themselves, particularly in the context of greatness. So itâs helpful to think of self-promotion not as talking about yourself, but as talking about your work. And if youâre enthusiastic about your work, self-promotion becomes that much easier, notes Curt Rosengren, the career coach. âIf youâre talking about a technology or project that youâre passionate about, the self-promotion becomes a byproduct of the passion,â he says.âAssume a roleAn article in The Cut about how âself-consciousâ people can get better at âself-promotionâ includes the tip, âpretend youâre playing a part.â The piece features advice from Ellen Hendriksen, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and the author of How to Be Yourself. After she talks in detail about entering a role, the article continues:âItâs a nice way of tricking yourself into doing something you donât want to do. But after the fact, remember to look back, and to mentally stitch those two selves back together. âIf you look back and youâre like, Huh, I just gave a talk to 500 people. Hmm. Maybe I can do that,â Hendriksen said, this can be a sort of backward route to self-confidence. âBy watching yourself do it, you start to believe you can do it. Itâs thinking, Okay, maybe now I can give a talk, o r be on stage. Not just me in this role, but me, as myself. But I think that only happens in hindsight.â âShow off what youâre good atStephanie Peterson, co-founder of PhotoFeeler.com, writes in The Muse that introverts should âidentify (and flaunt) your quiet strengths.ââOnce youâve recognized what your strengths are, try to find ways to call attention to them in the office. For me, that simply meant saying out loud what I was already thinking. Iâve always preferred reading non-fiction at home to crowded social events on the weekends, but during conversation with acquaintances and colleagues, I neglected to voice the references that came to mind. It wasnât until opening up that I gained a reputation as a trusty source of thoughtful, interesting information.â

Expanded U.S. News Part-time Rankings
Expanded U.S. News Part-time Rankings Expanded U.S. News Part-time Rankings To add to its ranking the country's full-time undergraduate, MBA and law school programs, U.S. News & World Report recently announced that it plans to flesh out the newest category of their rankings: part-time JD and MBA programs. While a school's part-time program was considered in the overall evaluation of a graduate school prior to the 2009 rankings (the first year the PT rankings appeared), these PT programs will now be ranked separately using a new, more advanced system. According to Bob Morse, U.S. News' director of data research, the magazine decided to make the part-time rankings more robust using new, separate survey tools because of the interest in part-time programs, as well as the high number of part-time school reviews already collected. Using a peer review survey, faculty and members of the administration will rate part-time programs on a scale from one to five. Ninety-nine part-time law programs will be evaluated based on these peer reviews, as well as additional cr iteria that may include entering students' LSAT scores and undergraduate GPAs, the program's acceptance rate, academic offerings and student activities. Part-time programs at 314 MBA schools will be ranked solely on these surveys. (For 2009, part-time programs were previously ranked by asking graduate school officials to select their pick of the top programs. Law school officials were asked to choose their top 15, while business schools were asked for their top 10.)While U.S. News' rankings of academic programs can be helpful to students during the admissions process, research by the ABA and LSAC has shown that these lists often take a school's attention away from academics and instead cause them to focus their time and financial resources on improving their rank. For example, the George Washington University Law School reacted to its drop in the rankings (from 20th to 28th) by accepting fewer part-time students as a way to increase their acceptance rate. We have yet to see how other schools will react to the fuller part-time rankings, though they probably won't be happy.-Posted by Rebecca Zissou
